and woman/man-as Classen and Howes explain:įrom Atwood’s perspective, Canada has traditionally occupied, and internalized, the position of the female in relation to the dominant, male land to the south (Atwood 1982: 389), and so the figure of the female is well suited to represent the Canadian character. And in both dualities, Atwood writes about the intersections, Canada/U.S. When Atwood writes about women, she is also writing about men. When Margaret Atwood writes about Canada, she is also writing about the U.S. Toward the final pages of Roxane Gay‘s An Untamed State, the primary narrator, Mireille, admits about her response to the earthquake in Haiti in the wake of her own personal horror of being kidnapped and repeatedly raped and tortured over thirteen days of captivity: “We sent money instead and it was then I felt like a true American” (p.

Usually the father of the twelve dancing princesses wants the curse broken because he just loves his daughters so much. The book’s biggest strength is the imagination behind the plotline. It will not sound familiar no matter how many retellings the reader has encountered before. Haskell has not simply expanded or filled in the holes of a well-loved story, but has used the main plot idea to write a book that is a story very much its own. Reveka and Dragos, lord of the Underworld, are too complex to belong in a standard fairy tale, and their motives are often politically and rationally inspired, which is unusual for the genre. The effect is that the story reads very much like fantasy, but not always like a fairy tale. This creative decision leads the focus of the story away from the princesses and onto Reveka, who is clever if not beautiful and fair if not always kind, and onto the prince who cast the curse in the first place. Review: The Princess Curse is a very original retelling of “The Twelve Dancing Princesses,” as the character striving to unravel the curse is not a dashing young man, but rather a spunky thirteen-year-old herbalist’s apprentice. Reveka, the apprentice of the castle’s herbalist, thinks she can find a way to make herself invisible and break the spell, even though everyone else who has tried has disappeared or fallen fast asleep. Summary: Twelve princesses suffer from a curse where they wake up every morning tired and with their shoes in tatters. I know, we need this now, right?įlame in the Mist follows heroine Mariko, who Ahdieh calls "an inventor and an innovator," and it is set in feudal Japan, using legends, myths, and actual history to tell a unique story, not unlike the way she used Arabian Nights to spin her The Wrath and the Dawn yarn. Bustle can exclusively announce that young adult author Ahdieh will release a brand new duology! Not only that, but I had the chance to chat with Ahdieh about the first book, Flame in the Mist, which has been called a mash-up of Disney's Mulan and fantasy action movie 47 Ronin. The Wrath and the Dawn author Renee Ahdieh proved with her debut series that she is a master of transporting readers into a whole new world, so we should all be jumping up and down with excitement now that she plans to do it again. WINNER: The McGannon Center Book Prize for 2018 Deeply researched and passionately written, Automating Inequality could not be more timely. The book is full of heart-wrenching and eye-opening stories, from a woman in Indiana whose benefits are literally cut off as she lays dying to a family in Pennsylvania in daily fear of losing their daughter because they fit a certain statistical profile. In Automating Inequality, Virginia Eubanks systematically investigates the impacts of data mining, policy algorithms, and predictive risk models on poor and working-class people in America. While we all live under this new regime of data analytics, the most invasive and punitive systems are aimed at the poor. Today, automated systems control which neighborhoods get policed, which families attain needed resources, and who is investigated for fraud. “This book is downright scary - but with its striking research and moving, indelible portraits of life in the ‘digital poorhouse,’ you will emerge smarter and more empowered to demand justice.” ― Naomi Klein, author of No Is Not Enough and This Changes Everything It was then that he decided to try his hand at novels. Learning intentions and success criteria contribute significantly to t eacher clarity, which Hattie’s research shows has can double or triple student learning. To make this happen in your classroom, “students have to know what they are learning, why they are learning it, how they will know they have learned it, and what it means to have learned.” To achieve this, teachers use learning intentions and success criteria on a daily basis. It’s exciting to think that with some scaffolding, and the intentional use of specific strategies and assessment, you will be able to identify exactly what part of the teaching process worked, and student learning will be visible. Instead, a more obvious visible difference, like between a person who is 5’5” and one who is is 6” tall, is a better teacher of height difference. When establishing a change or difference, it’s not enough to see the difference in height between one person who is 5’3” and another who is 5’4”. Frey and Fisher explain it using height as an example. It establishes that learning must be seen and obvious, not assumed. “Visible learning” is a ground-breaking concept coined by education researcher John Hattie.
